Power analysis is one of the key aspects of experimental design.
For obtaining results of a certain effect size with a given
degree of confidence, it is important to determine the
adequate sample size.
Besides determining the sample size, power analysis can be used
to determine the probability of detecting an
effect of a certain size, with a given level of
confidence, using a certain sample size. If the probability is
high enough, the experiment can be conducted under the
predetermined conditions.
So, power analysis can be used for the following:
- a priori: computing required sample size
- computing required alpha level (level of significance)
- computing achieved power
- computing required effect size
I will conduct power analysis in G*Power software for any type of statistical test. If you are not sure what statistical test is required for the study of interest, I can suggest the most suitable one according to the description you provide.
